New Delhi: In line with the Government’s COP26 commitments, Ministry of Steel CSIR has asked the stakeholders to develop a time bound action plan to reduce emissions in the steel industry. According to a ministry document, globally the iron and steel industry contributes around 8 per cent of the total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on an annual basis, while in India, it contributes 12 per cent to the total. In a recent meeting, Steel Minister Ram Chandra Prasad Singh urged “stakeholders to develop a time bound action plan and make concerted efforts to reduce emissions from the steel industry in line with the commitments made by the government in COP26”. .
The current scenario, the way forward to promote the transition to green steel, various strategies and technologies that can be adopted by the steel industry to produce green steel, and the level of technology readiness, were also discussed. among.
The meeting also discussed the use of green hydrogen in iron production and the use of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies to reduce emissions.
The ministry said, “R&D project proposals from reputed academic institutions, research laboratories and steel companies are in joint collaborative mode for development of new alternative processes and technologies to address the issues facing the sector… (more ) To provide financial assistance under R&D plan for the financial year 2022-23”.
