Co-operative Societies become buyers on Government e-Marketplace; know what it means

In a move to enable cooperatives to reach out to over 45 lakh sellers on a single platform, the government has approved the registration of cooperatives as ‘buyers’ on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform. According to an official statement, through an open and transparent process through the portal, the cooperatives will get competitive price in a very short time and their administrative burden will also be reduced.

“Under the leadership of Union Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, the Ministry of Cooperation is encouraging multi-state cooperatives and cooperatives registered under State Cooperative Acts to join GeM platform for the benefit of their members and hope that more More co-operative societies will benefit from joining the GeM platform,” the Ministry of Cooperation said in a statement.

It states that at present there are about 8.54 lakh cooperative societies in the district. India With around 29 crore subscriptions. They have been doing a variety of activities to produce goods and services. These cooperatives make huge purchases of goods and services from the open market to support their operations. A need was felt to provide them a platform to avail competitive prices through a transparent and efficient process which resulted in benefits to the members of the cooperatives.
Benefits of GeM Portal for Cooperatives

Procurement through GeM will help the cooperatives to get competitive prices through an open and transparent process and will be financially beneficial for the members of the societies. Cooperatives can procure from around 45 lakh certified vendors/service providers available across the country on a single GeM platform.

Following standard procedures on GeM will save time and reduce administrative burden. This will also enhance the credibility of cooperatives as complaints of mismanagement of funds will be reduced.

The gross merchandise value of procurement using GeM was over Rs 1 lakh crore in FY 2021-22. About 54 lakh products are listed in 9,702 product categories and 279 service categories. According to the statement, around Rs 10,000 crore is estimated to be saved in the financial year 2021-22.

A total of Rs 22,991 crore was purchased on the government e-marketplace portal in the financial year 2019-20, as against Rs 17,462 crore in 2018-19, Rs 6,188 crore in 2017-18 and Rs 422 crore in 2016-17 . The portal was launched in August 2016 for online procurement of goods and services by all Ministries and Departments of the Central Government.

According to official data, the number of sellers on the portal increased by 187 per cent to 40,02,014 in 2021-22 as against 13,96,468 in the previous fiscal. There were a total of 3,47,254 sellers on the portal in FY 2019-20, as against 2,07,815 in 2018-19, 86,835 in 2017-18 and 4,299 in 2016-17.

The number of buyers on the portal also increased by 14 per cent to 59,130 ​​in the financial year 2021-22, from 52,069 in 2020-21. The total number of buyers in the financial year 2019-20 was 45,206, which was 35,197 in 2018-19, 21,254 in 2017-18 and 2,288 in 2016-17.
