CNG: Govt to soon allow retrofitting of CNG kits in petrol cars – Times of India

New Delhi: Soon you will be able to take back your BS-VI petrol cars CNG Kits, which can reduce fuel expenditure by about 40-50%.
The road transport ministry on Thursday issued a draft notification setting out the emission and other norms for such retrofitment. Officials said the demand was felt for some time as currently only BS-VI emission norms compliant vehicles are being sold across the country. As of now, vehicles that meet the emission norms up to BS-IV are allowed CNG retrofitment.
“This is a very positive step by the government as CNG as a fuel will bring great relief to the common people from the high expenditure on petrol. Second, it is a green fuel. Since the government has proposed retrofitment of CNG kits in vehicles with engine capacity up to 1500 cc, it will cover all cars and some SUVs as well,” said transport expert Anil Chhikara.
He said the change was necessary given that it is mandatory for commercial vehicles plying in Delhi and its suburbs to be on CNG.
The ministry has said in the draft notification that it will be allowed for vehicles whose gross vehicle weight is (GVW) For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and having CNG kit, the type clearance shall be valid for three years and such clearance shall be renewed once in every three years.
Industry sources said the return of CNG in such vehicle kits could be around Rs 50,000 per vehicle, but owners would quickly recover the account due to the savings in fuel cost.
