Coimbatore: Health minister Ma Subramanian on Monday suspended Dr T Munusamy, head of the department of cardiology, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), for skipping work and faking attendance record.
Subramanian, who visited CMCH on Sunday, had received a complaint from hospital dean A Nirmala against Munusamy, a resident of Salem. “Health secretary P Senthil Kumar checked the attendance register and found that Munusamy’s colleagues used to mark CL (casual leave) if he didn’t turn up for work. He would modify CL to his signature Mu in Tamil when he returned,” the minister said in Chennai. “The health department will conduct an inquiry and take departmental actions against him.”
Munusamy was warned about his excessive absenteeism several times, Nirmala said. “I am yet to receive the suspension order from the headquarters.”
The cardiologist, meanwhile, neither acknowledged nor ruled out the reason for which he was placed under suspension. “I was allotted a post in CMCH in March 2021 during the transfer counselling. But it was difficult to travel to Coimbatore from Salem daily,” the 54-year-old man told TOI.
“The inquiry should be conducted in a fair manner. I’m sure that assistant professors and postgraduate students will vouch for my contributions to the medical field,” he added.
