BHUBANESWAR: Odisha has become the premier sporting hub in the country and continuing with its commitment towards the betterment of sports, the draw for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, scheduled in the state in January next year, was held in the city on Thursday the in presence of CM Naveen Patnaik, FIH acting president Seif Ahmed and others.
Hosts India will be the highest-ranked team in their pool at the World Cup to be held in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from January 13-29, 2023. India, who made the quarter-finals in the last World Cup in 2018, also held in Odisha, have been bunched in Pool D alongside England, Spain and Wales.
Naveen welcomed the teams and everyone else to the premier FIH event. “We are always very proud to welcome the best hockey teams and players of the world for such an outstanding event,” Naveen said. “This time, the appetite is even bigger since, on top of our magnificent Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar – where so many wonderful sports stories have already been written – we are inviting the world to a brand-new arena, namely the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. This stadium is a further testimony of our strong commitment towards hockey. Congratulations and best wishes to all the teams,” the CM added.
FIH acting president was also excited for the 16-team competition that will add another jewel in the crown of Odisha’s sporting accomplishments. “We can’t wait to see the best teams in the world in action in the new jewel of hockey, the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, which, alongside the iconic Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar, will host the 2023 FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup,” said Seif.
