In a shocking event, a 17-year-old student from a private pre-university college in Karnataka’s Kolar district gave birth on campus Monday, according to a report by the Indian Express. The Class 11 student delivered her baby in the women’s toilet, a police officer confirmed.

Immediately following the birth, both the girl and her newborn were taken to a hospital for medical attention. The girl’s parents later filed a complaint at the Kolar Women’s Police Station, prompting the police to take swift action. A police officer confirmed that they have initiated a case and launched a manhunt to apprehend the accused.

According to the police, a complaint has been filed under Section 376 (2)(n) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, which deal with aggravated penetrative sexual assault and serial rape of the same victim.

The investigation revealed that the girl and a boy had been in a relationship for the past two years. Despite the girl’s pregnancy, it remains unclear how her family did not notice her condition or why she chose to conceal it. “As the girl recovers post-delivery, we will speak to her with the assistance of a female counselor,” a police officer was quoted by the Indian Express.

Despite the case being reported after the introduction of new criminal laws, the alleged crime occurred nine months ago, rendering the new laws inapplicable in this instance, explained the police.

Earlier this year, a similar incident was reported in Karnataka, in which a class 9 girl from a government residential school reportedly delivered a newborn boy in a hospital, prompting the registration of a rape case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POCSO. The 14-year-old girl was residing in the hostel of a government boarding school in the district of Tumakuru.
