NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India (CJI, NV Raman on Saturday rued the lack of “basic minimum standards” of judicial infrastructure in the country, noting that “mere allocation of funds is not enough”, reports Abhinav Garg,
Addressing a gathering that included Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and judges of the Supreme Court, Delhi high court and other high courts, the CJI underlined the need to fill existing vacancies and also raise the number of judges in HCs. “Judicial infrastructure needs to be improved. Unfortunately, we are not even meeting the basic minimum standards in this area. It has been my endeavour since assuming the office of CJI, to put in place an institutional mechanism to coordinate and oversee the improvement of judicial infrastructure,” he said at the ‘National Seminar on Adjudication of IPR Disputes in India’.
“Mere allocation of funds is not enough…I have been pursuing the government for setting up statutory authorities – at the Center and the states…waiting for a positive reply,” the CJI said.
