Cinema halls closed in Delhi as Covid-19 cases rise; RRR, Jersey release in trouble?

The Delhi government on Tuesday ordered closure of cinema halls, theaters and multiplexes to contain the rise in COVID-19 cases. It has been said by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal that a yellow alert will be implemented in the national capital on Monday after its biggest one-day spike in Covid-19 cases in six months.

“COVID19 restrictions in Delhi under Yellow Alert of Graded Response Action Plan: Curfew from 10 pm to 5 am, Delhi Metro, restaurants, bars to operate at 50 per cent capacity; Ordered closure of cinema halls, spas, gyms, multiplexes, banquet halls, auditoriums and sports complexes with immediate effect.

In October itself, cinema halls, theaters and multiplexes in the city were allowed to function with full seating capacity. They were closed during the second wave of Covid in April and offered partial relief in July when the government allowed them to operate at 50 per cent seating capacity.

The decision to shut down theaters in Delhi is going to severely impact the box office revenue of recently released films like 83, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Pushpa: The Rise – Part I. Got positive reviews to an extent. Didn’t manage to rake in a significant collection on its opening weekend. With the theaters in Delhi shut, the business of the film will be hit hard as it was doing well in the national capital. Ranveer Singh-starrer cricket drama ’83’ had earned Rs 47 crore at the box office in three days since its release. Directed by Kabir Khan, the film chronicles the Indian cricket team’s lucrative 1983 World Cup victory.

Shahid Kapoor starrer Jersey will not release on December 31, new date will be announced later

Meanwhile, Pushpa, which is essentially a Telugu film, has received appreciation in North India as well, with its Hindi version steadily increasing in collections. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Tuesday that Pushpa (Hindi) continues to be the first choice among movie watchers between Spider-Man: No Way Home and 83. Its Hindi version has crossed Rs 39 crore. But this move will definitely affect the business of Allu Arjun starrer film. Similarly, a lion’s share of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s box office collection has been coming from Mumbai and Delhi-UP. The current domestic total of the film is Rs 179.37 crore.

On the other hand, the makers of Jersey have decided to postpone the scheduled release of the film in view of the closure of cinema halls in Delhi. Jersey starring Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur was scheduled to release in theaters on December 31.

The other big film which is likely to be affected by this move is SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which is slated to hit the screens worldwide on January 7, just a week before the Sankranti festival. This is Rajamouli’s first film after his hugely successful Baahubali series of films, thus the excitement about RRR is high. Though the release date of RRR was announced at a time when the makers thought that things would turn out for the better, it is not entirely unexpected that they once again shift the film to another date.
