Chirag Paswan flexes muscles with ‘Blessing Yatra’ from father’s seat as uncle on ‘PR stunt’

Chirag Paswan, facing internal rebellion, will begin his yatra on Monday from Hajipur, the traditional Lok Sabha seat of his father Ram Vilas Paswan, to rally party supporters after the old party members split.

Chirag had announced on June 20 that he would begin the ‘Aashirwad Yatra’ from July 5, the birth anniversary of his father and party founder, as his faction is fighting a street fight with a rival group.

Paswan’s announcement came after a meeting of the LJP’s national executive, which backed his leadership and hit out at a faction led by his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras for working against the party’s constitution. He insisted that the meeting had more than 90 percent of the members of the national executive.

The decision to start the yatra from Hajipur is significant as Ram Vilas Paswan was elected to the Lok Sabha several times from here and Paras now represents the seat in the House. Chirag Paswan said that Hajipur has been his father’s ‘karmabhoomi’. The yatra will start across the state and will be followed by the party’s national council. The executive also passed a resolution demanding Bharat Ratna for Ram Vilas Paswan.

Meanwhile, paying tribute to Dalit leader and Lok Janshakti Party founder Ram Vilas Paswan on his birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said his contribution to public service and empowering Dalits will always be remembered.

Paswan, who was a minister in the Modi government, died in October last year. He was among the most experienced parliamentarians and had served as a minister in governments led by various parties, from socialist groups to the Congress and the BJP.

In a tweet, Modi said, “Today is the birth anniversary of my friend Late Ram Vilas Paswan ji. I miss his presence very much. He was one of the most experienced parliamentarians and administrators of India. His contribution to public service and empowering Dalits is Contribution will always be remembered.

Paswan’s death has triggered factionalism within his party and both his son Chirag Paswan and his brother Pashupati Kumar Paras claim to represent the LJP.

Paras recently expressed his displeasure over Chirag’s program and questioned whether his father’s birth anniversary is an occasion to pay tribute or seek people’s blessings.

He also advised his nephew, with whom he has burnt his bridges, to organize his events in Jamui, the Lok Sabha seat he is representing for the second consecutive time. With the numbers in his favour, Paras managed to lay claim to the party’s resources like its state headquarters building here, where a function would be held to mark the birth anniversary of its founding president, who breathed his last in October last year.

Nonetheless, he faces the daunting challenge of uniting the Paswan community in the state, who looked up to the former Union minister as their symbol, with Chirag presenting himself as the rightful heir to his father’s legacy. Should not have missed out. A heated argument between the two groups has started on the streets. On Saturday, Chirag supporters waved black flags at local MP Mehboob Ali Kaiser in Khagaria, which incidentally is also Paswan’s home district.

Kaiser is a former state Congress president who, upon joining the LJP, won a ticket from Khagaria in 2014 and became the only Muslim MP from the NDA at that time. Five years later, he is trusted again by Ram Vilas Paswan for a party ticket and his side with the Paras camp is being seen as a betrayal by Chirag supporters.

It would be interesting to note the stand taken by the major NDA constituents in Bihar BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) on the birth anniversary celebrations. The JD(U) has been accused of carrying out partition to avenge the Chirag rebellion against Nitish Kumar in the assembly elections.

The BJP has been accused of silence by Chirag, who has always assumed that it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was Hanuman to Lord Ram. The saffron party has not openly rejected Chirag, though Speaker Om Birla has acknowledged the split faction and showed that he does not mind doing business with the rival camp. The day also coincides with the inauguration of the silver jubilee celebrations of the RJD, arguably the party with the largest attendance in the state, whose leader Tejashwi Yadav has already gifted Chirag an olive branch, which gives him a rapport between late Paswan and his father Reminds me of close relationships.
