Dr RS Sharma, Head, CoWIN Platform said that from January 1, children in the age group of 15-18 years will be able to register on the CoWIN app. The vaccination of children will start from January 3, 2022.

Ahead of the vaccination drive, Dr RS Sharma said, “We have added an additional (10th) ID card for registration – student ID card as some may not have Aadhaar or other identity cards.”

Hyderabad-based vaccine maker Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin on Saturday received approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DGCI) for emergency use for children in the age group of 12-18 years, amid rising concerns over the new COVID variant Omicron.

The vaccine manufacturer submitted data from clinical trials aged 12-18 years for COVAXIN (BBV152) to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).

Bharat Biotech had earlier said that the data had been reviewed by CDSCO and the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) and provided its positive recommendations.

This makes Covaxin the second vaccine approved for use in children in India. Earlier, Zydus Cadila’s three-dose DNA vaccine was allowed for use on adults and children over the age of 12.

Meanwhile, the number of Omicron infections has risen to 415 across the country. However, out of the total omicron positive cases, 115 have been discharged. The Union Health Ministry said on Saturday that a total of 17 states have reported omicron infection so far.
