Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik On Tuesday said that child-friendly police stations would be set up in each of the 34 police districts of the state. The move is aimed at making minors feel more comfortable in filing police complaints and recording their statements.
“On various occasions, children are subjected to crime and police stations are visited to seek help from the police. The police also bring children to police stations in violation of the law. Keeping this in view the Chief Minister has given a child have been directed to set up friendly police stations in each police district,” read a written statement from the chief ministers’ office.
Patnaik said the atmosphere at the proposed police stations would be completely different from normal. Kid-friendly police stations will have a distinctive logo and signboard. The rooms will have kid-friendly decor, cartoon wall paintings, library, toys, first aid kit, bedding and furniture to provide a playful and calm environment for the kids.
“Such measures are aimed at reducing the fear and mental pressure of children visiting police stations, demanding justice. Children will get books and newspapers. Names and phone numbers of child welfare officers Child-friendly police will be displayed prominently in police stations. Statement added.
The police officers will educate and counsel the children about the legal provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. protection of children from sexual offenses (poxo) Act, 2012, Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act, 1956, Child Labor (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
The child rights campaigner said, “We welcome the verdict. Any child is afraid to go to the police station and express his pain. Sangeeta Mohanty said.
Former Gajapati SP Sara Sharma and incumbent Sundargarh SP Sagarika Nath had earlier started child-friendly facilities in some police stations of both the districts.
