GUWAHATI: Marking the first 100 days in office on Friday, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced changes in the state’s education system, including compulsory study of both Indian and Assam history and geography in school, upgrading every high school to a senior secondary school, merger of class X and XII state boards and Bringing all engineering is included. State Colleges under the Washington Agreement.
“We have decided that both Indian and Assam history and geography will be added as compulsory subjects for all students from the next academic session up to class X under the concept of holistic education as envisaged in the new education policy,” Sarma said.
The state government has also decided to implement the “Senior Secondary School” concept from the 2022 academic session under the National Education Policy. The Chief Minister said that with the implementation of the scheme, all the high schools in the state would automatically be upgraded to the higher secondary level.
We have taken a big decision under the new education policy. From next year there will be a senior secondary school system. Every high school would become a higher secondary school and every junior college would have classes IX and X.
For this, Sarma said, there will be a big exercise, which will include the merger of SEBA and AHSEC. “We will also need many postgraduate teachers,” he said.
On technical education, Sarma said, “We want to bring all our engineering colleges under the Washington Agreement so that we can become partners in the global technology movement. Work has already started in this direction.”
Membership of the Washington Accord is an international recognition of the quality of graduate engineering education offered by a member country and an opportunity to rank it world class.
It encourages and facilitates the mobility of engineering graduates and professionals internationally. The National Board of Accreditation of India became a permanent signatory member of the Washington Agreement on 13 June 2014.
Sarma said that the medical colleges of the state are undoubtedly the best in the country except AIIMS and few other colleges.
