A protest by contractual workers of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Thermal Power Plant at Madwa in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district turned violent on Sunday, injuring around 20 policemen. The contract workers of the plant operated by the Chhattisgarh State Power Company were protesting for the last several days demanding to make their services permanent.

However, it turned violent when the police and the local administration tried to remove them from the site citing a rise in the Covid-19 cases in the area and the state, an official said. Janjgir-Champa Superintendent of Police Prashant Thakur said, “More than 20 police personnel received injuries during the incident and windscreens of several police vehicles were damaged. A private vehicle was also torched. The situation is now under control.”

Other officials said that the police had to use water cannons to clear the protesters as some workers of the Madwa plant, who were suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes, had to be evacuated immediately. While the protesting workers were to speak to the chairman of the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Company on January 4, some of them demanded that the session be held on Sunday through video conferencing, and even after it was organized, the agitation participants refused. He said to vacate the area.
