Chhattisgarh BJP MLA Narayan Chandel’s son booked for rape

Raipur: A woman has accused the son of a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Chhattisgarh of sexually abusing her for several years on the pretext of marriage, after which a case of rape has been registered against him. An officer of Raipur Police gave this information on Thursday. A rape case was registered on Wednesday against Palas Chandel, son of Janjgir Champa MLA Narayan Chandel, leader of the opposition in the Chhattisgarh assembly, the official said. “It was registered here as zero FIR and then transferred to Janjgir Champa police for further action,” said Kavita Dhurve, SHO of Mahila Thana police station.

Dhurve said, “The woman has alleged that the accused was sexually exploiting her for the last few years in Janjgir-Champa on the pretext of marriage. She has also alleged that he got her aborted.”

He has been charged under sections 367(2)(n) (repeated rape of the same woman) and 313 (causing abortion without the woman’s consent) of the Indian Penal Code, the officer said.

Narayan Chandel did not respond to calls for comments. Meanwhile, state Congress spokesperson Dhananjay Singh Thakur said the BJP should remove Chandel from the post of Leader of Opposition and expel him from the party.
