If you want to beat the heat this summer and get close to the diverse wildlife, we have the perfect suggestion for you. Explore the marine wildlife of India this summer while enjoying some stunning views. These parks were established to conserve marine biodiversity. Let’s take a look at some of the animal reserves of the country’s 7,516.6 km coastline:
Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Make your trip to the tropical island even more memorable by visiting this marine national park. It was established in 1983 to protect the local turtle population and unique corals that are not found anywhere else. Apart from the diverse marine wildlife, more than 270 species of birds living on the island can also be seen. Participate in activities like scuba, snorkel or glass-bottom boat from Wandoor, half an hour east of Port Blair, to explore all that the marine park has to offer.
Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, Tamil Nadu
The park is located inside the large Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. The 560 sq km marine park is made up of 21 islands and coral reefs. Spread over a distance of 160 km between Thoothukudi and Dhanushkodi, you can explore this rich biosphere zone in a glass-bottom boat from the nearby town of Rameswaram. You can see sea grass, coral, sea cucumber, turtle, pearl oyster, sea horse, herring, barracuda and blue whale.
Malvan Marine Wildlife Sanctuary, Maharashtra
If you want to see some playful dolphins in the sea, then make sure to visit Malvan Marine Wildlife Sanctuary in southern Maharashtra. Established in 1987, you can explore the area by taking a boat from the pier in Malvan. One can also go snorkeling or diving and come across anemones, mollusks, pearl oysters, coral, seaweed and many species of fish.
Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, Odisha
This marine wildlife park is the only favorite nesting site of Olive Ridley turtles by the Indian Ocean. The 1,435 km of coastline by Gahirmatha was declared a protected marine park in 1997. The shores of this beach are filled with hundreds of thousands of turtles in various stages of the birth process, from October to May. The mangroves surrounding the park make the water rich in nutrients, which is ideal for all this species of sea turtle.
