During the ICC World Test Championship final at The Oval in London on Saturday, Indian batsman Shubman Gill was dismissed in the second innings. Australia’s seamer, Scott Boland, managed to find the outside edge of Gill in the massive eighth over of India’s 444. As the ball flew towards him, fielder Cameron Green jumped to his right and caught the ball inconclusively.

It was a brilliant effort from Cameron Green but Shubman Gill has to be disappointed when his hand turns soon after taking the catch. — Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) June 10, 2023

Cameron Green takes another brilliant catch to dismiss Shubman Gill. At tea, India are 41/1, needing 403 more runs to win the game. #WTCFinal #WTC2023 pic.twitter.com/qXhfnCZmFE— Ridhima Pathak (@PathakRidhima) June 10, 2023

What has the third umpire done?
The ball was clearly touching the ground and the hand was not under it. ,Gill not out!#WTCFinal #INDvsAUS @ICC @BCCI @Shubman Gill pic.twitter.com/NkhJMZB2SX

The on-field umpires, Chris Gaffney and Richard Illingworth, decided to send the catch to third umpire Richard Kettleborough. After reviewing several replays, Kettleborough ruled the catch clean. However, it was not clear from the live footage whether the tall Australian player managed to avoid the grass after making contact with the ball.
The dismissal came just before tea, leaving India at 41 for one after 7.1 overs. This sparked several debates on social media regarding the legality of the catch.
