Significantly, this decision has come at a time when Channi, the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab, is in power.
Punjab has the largest population in terms of percentage of Dalits in the country. Dalits constitute more than 30 percent of the population and an equally large section belongs to the general category.
The decision to constitute the General Commission was taken in the cabinet meeting held at Punjab Bhawan under the chairmanship of Channi.
According to a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office quoted by ANI, this commission will go a long way in protecting the interests of the unreserved sections besides effective implementation of various welfare schemes for the benefit of the poor of the class.
It is noteworthy that considering the long standing demand of the general category (unreserved category) employees that their interests are not being protected, this decision has been taken by the cabinet and the state government has been asked to apply for general category on the same lines.
