Channi will not attend the program with controversial Christian doctor, Chief Minister’s Office clarified amid media reports

Sensing the evil eye, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has dropped from his itinerary the program that would have been sitting with a self-styled godman in Moga on Thursday.

Channi was to attend the foundation stone laying ceremony of a church on the outskirts of Moga. But what raised eyebrows was that the program was going to be addressed by self-styled godman Baljinder Singh, who has a controversial past.

Singh was arrested in 2018 for allegedly raping a woman, who was part of his security team. Despite a controversial past, Singh has millions of followers on YouTube and political observers were linking Channi’s presence at the event as an attempt to reach out to the Christian community in the state.

However, due to media reports and poor optics, she has abandoned her plans to attend the ceremony. Meanwhile, actor Sonu Sood also clarified on Twitter that he is not attending any events and will be shooting in Mumbai.

However, Channi’s revised program will continue with spending the night at a gurdwara at Shaheed Baba Tega Singh Gurdwara in Chand Purana village in Moga district. He will also address a public meeting in Baghapurana town, and preside over the installation ceremony of a statue of Maharaja Agrasen at Baba Jassa Singh Ramgaria, an old grain market on the Baghapurana by-pass on the outskirts of Moga.

The visit to Moga is being seen as an attempt by the Punjab Chief Minister to reach out to religious organizations.

With elections only a few months away, political parties are trying to woo religious organizations and prominent saints. Recently, SAD supremo Sukhbir Badal and his wife and former Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal also visited Nanaksar Thatth Gurdwara in Nanaksar near Jagraon in Ludhiana district and Anand Ishwar Darbar That at Badni Kalan in Moga district. Even Channi has visited many deras in the state after becoming the chief minister.
