Charanjit Singh Channi

Charanjit Singh Channi, who was elected MLA for the third time from Chamkaur Sahib, is the first Dalit leader from Punjab to become the Chief Minister. Channi was earlier a cabinet minister in Captain Amarinder Singh’s government and was one of the ministers who revolted against the captain. He openly demanded the removal of Captain Amarinder Singh. However, at one time Channi was a special person of the Captain camp. Being from the Dalit class, he got the ministerial post.
Charanjit Singh Channi, who studied law, was born in a middle-class Ravidassia family in Kharar, Mohali. He has also been the head of the city council Kharar. In 2007, he won the election as an independent for the first time. After this, he became the face of Dalit politics with the Congress and won the election in 2012 on a party ticket. In 2017 he was elected MLA for the third time from Sri Chamkaur Sahib Vidhan Sabha.
Ambika Soni and Navjot Sidhu suggested the name
Ambika Soni appealed to the high command to wear a Sikh turban in the morning and make the MLA elected leader the Chief Minister. After this Navjot Singh Sidhu talked of either making him more Chief Minister or making a Dalit face the Chief Minister. After this, the high command stamped the name of Charanjit Singh Channi.
Congress played master stroke
Shiromani Akali Dal Badal has now announced in collaboration with BSP that if a coalition government is formed, the Deputy Chief Minister will be a Dalit face. At the same time, BJP has also talked about making a Dalit face as Deputy Chief Minister. In the midst of all this, Congress has played a masterstroke. The Congress high command had already made the Dalit leader the chief minister and made preparations to fully capitalize on it in the elections. After Channi became the Chief Minister, the party is expected to get a major share in the 32% vote share of the Dalit community in Punjab.
