Channi and Kejriwal Woo Auto, Taxi Driver Ahead of Punjab Elections

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday assured auto-rickshaw drivers that their pending challans would be waived off as he listened to their complaints here. Channi met a group of auto-rickshaw drivers in Gill Chowk area. His meeting with him came hours before AAP’s national convener and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s “auto dialogue programme”. In Moga, Kejriwal also took a dig at Channi for meeting auto-rickshaw drivers ahead of his proposed talks with Channi.

According to an official release, Channi stopped on the way to Anaj Mandi to listen to the problems of the auto-rickshaw drivers. Channi, along with Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, sat on wooden benches to sit among the auto-rickshaw owners and interacted with them. Channi also enjoyed the tea served by him. During the conversation, the Chief Minister assured them of sympathetic consideration of their legitimate demands.

Channi also addressed the gathering and told them that in his early days, he himself drove an auto-rickshaw. He announced that new registration certificates would be issued soon to stop their harassment.

He also announced that his pending challans would be waived off. Channi asked them to follow the traffic rules and acceded to their demand to draw a yellow line especially for driving auto-rickshaws. Besides Channi and Sidhu, ministers Manpreet Singh Badal and Bharat Bhushan Ashu, MLAs Kuldeep Singh Vaid, Sanjay Talwar and Lakhbir Singh Lakha were also present.

Meanwhile, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Monday had dinner at the residence of an auto driver, the group he is trying to woo ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections. The Delhi Chief Minister said that every autorickshaw driver in the national capital considers Kejriwal his brother as his government has done all the work and added that he has now become the brother of drivers in Punjab.

Kejriwal was invited by auto driver Dilip Kumar Tiwari for dinner at his residence. The AAP leader accepted the invitation and went there with state party leaders Bhagwant Mann and Harpal Singh Cheema. Earlier, addressing an ‘Auto Samvad’ program, he had promised that the problems of auto and taxi drivers would be resolved if they help AAP bring power in Punjab in the upcoming elections. He said that before the formation of the AAP government in Delhi, auto drivers had to pay bribes many times from morning till night. Kejriwal said his government has made all services faceless, which means a person does not need to make rounds of offices to get his work done.

He said that he needs to visit the office only once for the fitness certificate and the rest of the work is done by the government servant on his arrival at the driver’s house. The AAP leader said that during the Covid pandemic, the Delhi government disbursed a total of Rs 150 crore by providing Rs 5,000 per month to the city’s auto, taxi and tempo drivers. He said that no other state government in the country has given this.

“Due to the unique work done by the Delhi government for the auto and cab drivers, every auto driver in Delhi considers me his brother. Similarly, today I have come as your brother. I have come to make a relationship. Make me your brother and I will solve all your problems.’ Rules and regulations will be made in Punjab, like those made in Delhi.
