There are many families who themselves wish that the bride should not be a ‘virgin’ and fail the virginity test. Even if the bride passes the test, she is deliberately failed.
But why so?
To answer this question, Bhaskar reached out to the bride who was deliberately failed in the virginity test by her in-laws in Pander village of Bhilwara. Was forced to spend the night with father-in-law. Beaten so much that the head exploded. Imprisoned for two years. One day after getting a chance, she ran away from her in-laws’ house. If no vehicle was found, he reached his home after walking 300 km.
The victim is with her mother at her home for two years, but even today she has not forgotten two years of marriage. When the Bhaskar reporter tried to talk, he flatly refused. After much persuasion by her mother, she agreed to narrate her ordeal.

‘I am a resident of Pander in Bhilwara. Father is not. Mother raised both of us sisters. There was neither land nor property, mother worked day and night. 4 years ago, my marriage was fixed in Jaipur by adding pie-pie.
The boys told that the boy is deaf, but does a job. The mother felt that the daughter would live comfortably in a city like Jaipur. Married above status. Dowry of Rs 2 lakh was also given.
After marriage, the mother went to Jodhpur to work. The in-laws performed a kukdi ceremony with me. Blood had come but the in-laws hid that sheet. By showing me the second sheet, I got dirty and filthy abuses.
Called my mother – Your daughter has failed in the cookery practice, take it, we will not keep it. After this they set up a panchayat and asked my mother for Rs 6 lakh. Husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, Jethani used to beat up every day for not paying money.
Father-in-law had a dirty eye on me, asking to sleep together
‘My father-in-law wanted a holy bride for his son, but himself kept a dirty eye on me. touching me inappropriately. Feeling alone, tried to force. He wanted me to be with him…but I didn’t accept it. If I protested, he would beat me up.
When I told all this to my husband, he called me a liar and beat me up. This increased the courage of the father-in-law. When I tried to tell my mom, snatched the phone and alleged that you talk to other boys. I used to keep me locked in the house for fear that I should not tell the deeds of my father-in-law. Nobody used to let me meet’.
Didn’t stop even when the head exploded, kept beating till he fainted
One day I protested against the dirty act of father-in-law and beat me. Mother-in-law, husband, Jethani all joined them. Everyone beat me so much that my head exploded. Even though the blood continued to flow, he did not stop the beating. He kept on beating till he fainted. As soon as I regained consciousness, I had thought that I would have to run away from here, otherwise my in-laws would not leave me alive.
Reached home after walking 300 km
The next day I ran away after getting a chance. I didn’t even have money. To save her life, she left for Bhilwara from Jaipur on foot. On the way, sometimes someone gave a lift and sometimes walked on foot. Eventually, after three days, she reached her home in Pander village of Bhilwara. Seeing the marks of injuries on my body, the mother was shocked. Taking a loan, got me admitted to the hospital for treatment. Got five stitches in the head. Was hospitalized for 15 days.
‘People want a bride as if she was born from a mother’s belly’
People want a daughter-in-law for their sons like she is born from the mother’s womb. No matter how bad one’s own intentions may be, the daughter-in-law should be ‘pure’. The dowry is taken before the Pihar people, yet if the hunger is not satisfied, they deceively declare the bride to have failed the virginity test in order to grab more money.
If the family members of the girl are unable to give money, sometimes the father-in-law and sometimes the brother-in-law makes him a victim of lust. Torture so much that the bride finds it easier to die. To avoid the practice of cooking, I did a job and did love marriage. We both work and help the victims of the cookery practice and their families.
