Top government sources said that the solution to the Manipur problem cannot be arrived at in one day and has to be tackled at different levels

The central government is deeply concerned about the developments in Manipur and has a threefold strategy in place to handle the crisis, sources told CNN-News18 on Wednesday.

Top government sources said that the solution to the Manipur problem cannot be arrived at in one day and has to be tackled at different levels.

At the community level, they said, the union home ministry and intelligence agencies are working to build more trust and peace between the warring Meitei and Kuki communities.

“They are looking at target groups who can be talked to at the community level for taking developments forward,” said a source.

Criminality is handled by the local administration with cases being taken on by the police and some by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the sources said.

Both communities have certain demands, like separate administrations for Kukis and Meiteis, and these have to be weighed and fulfilled by both the state government and the Centre, they added.

“The third issue is securing the border and stopping drugs from entering,” said a source. “Assam Rifles is handling this at the borders and filing regular cases against the infiltrators. Illegal immigrants are sent back from the borders and those who have snuck inside are handed over to the police.”

According to reports, some militants have entered Manipur from Myanmar and Bangladesh’s Chittagong region.
