Center releases Rs 831 crore grant to Odisha under ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’

In order to expedite the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Odisha, the central government on Friday released Rs 830.85 crore to the state. Odisha is planning to become a ‘Har Ghar Jal’ state in 2024, the Ministry of Jal Shakti said in a press release.

Out of 85.67 lakh rural households in the state, 35.37 lakh (41.28 per cent) households have tap water supply. Water supply work is in full swing to make arrangements for water supply through taps in the villages.

Provision has been made to ensure 100% tap water connectivity to all rural households. According to the ministry, the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given top priority to make provision of tap water connections to every rural household across the country under Jal. life mission. There has been a massive increase in the budgetary allocation to Rs 3,323.42 crore in 2021-22 from Rs 812.15 crore in the previous year for Odisha.

Jal Jeevan Mission is implemented in a decentralized manner following a ‘bottom-up’ approach, with the local village community playing an important role from planning to implementation and management to operation and maintenance.

For this, the state undertakes community activities such as engaging with the community and strengthening water committees. So far, Odisha has constituted 3,695 Village Water and Sanitation Committees.

So far 2,345 Village Action Plans have been developed. The program encourages the participation of women as they are the primary water managers in any household.

Six Implementation Support Agencies (ISAs) engaged in the State to create awareness about the mission, sensitize the village community on the importance of safe water and support Panchayati Raj Institutions for program implementation Huh.

In Odisha, 17,756 women have been trained to conduct water quality tests using field test kits. Efforts are being made to ensure availability of tap water for drinking, cooking of mid-day meal, hand washing and use in toilets in all schools and Anganwadi centres.

So far, tap water has been supplied to 36,372 schools (67 per cent) and 29,097 (54 per cent) Anganwadi centers in Odisha.
