Bharuch/Surat: A Disaster Prevention and Management Center was inaugurated on Friday in Bharuch’s Ankleshwar town to deal with the emergency arising due to hazardous chemicals during transportation. The facility will also serve as an emergency response center for tracking and monitoring the transportation of hazardous chemical waste.
Nicer Global, an initiative of the Indian Chemical Council (ICC), has completed training for the first two batches consisting of 15 members in effective management to respond to emergencies. The teams include retired police officers and defense personnel as well as fire attendants.
Ravi Kapoor, Chairman of ICC’s Sustainability Committee and Managing Director of Heubach Colors, said, “We intend to provide emergency on-road assistance to chemical industries every 200 km with a total coverage of over 4000 km across the country. .
An emergency response team consists of retired police officers, defense and fire personnel. The training focuses on human and material safety, rapid incident assessment, arranging infrastructure to handle situations, post-incident action, communication and stakeholder engagement, driver visibility and transparency.
Chandrakant Nayak, resident and chief operating officer, Dow Chemicals India, said, “This facility will ensure the safe transportation of hazardous chemicals. It is very important to train drivers as they are key individuals. Major incidents can be caused by high speed, lack of adequate sleep. There are pressures and worries to arrive on time. Nicer Holob has a database of around 1.30 lakh drivers, 52 chemical companies and 527 transporters.”
The state government has also approved another similar disaster prevention and management center at Jhagadia.
Shankar said the team will take immediate action in about 11 sectors of various highway roads including Ankleshwar-Thane, Satara-Belgaum, Belgaum Ranebennur, Ranebennur-Udupi, Tumkur-Vellore, Ahmedabad-Morbi, Ahmedabad-Udaipur-Nagda and Kishangarh. Kay, CEO, Nicer Globe.
