Telangana government is fighting for its rightful share in Krishna Jal, demanding to rectify the injustice done to Telangana region in a unified AP. But, the Center has once again done injustice to Telangana by issuing a unilateral gazette notification on the jurisdiction of Krishna and Godavari basins. The Ministry of Jal Shakti should have consulted and sought opinion of the Telangana government before finalizing the jurisdiction.
There is no dispute and no common projects over the irrigation projects built on the Godavari river. Nevertheless, the Ministry opted to include 71 projects in the Godavari basin under the purview of GRMB. At present, out of total 811 tmcft of Krishna water, Telangana has got only 299 tmcft in provisional allocation, while AP was allotted 512 tmcft. Telangana should have got 565 tmcft and AP should have got the remaining amount.
CM K Chandrashekhar Rao had written several letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of Jal Shakti to solve the problem of water. On an assurance given by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat during the second Apex Council meeting held in October 2020, the state government had withdrawn the cases in the Supreme Court and wrote a letter to the Centre. But, there was no response from the Centre. The Center seems to have acted on letters written by AP CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who wanted the Ministry of Jal Shakti to take over all projects on Krishna and Godavari rivers. BJP Telangana president Bandi Sanjay also demanded similar action from the Centre. Due to this, both Jagan and Sanjay influenced the Center by issuing this gazette notification.
