Center asks West Bengal government to review Covid norms amid spike in cases post Durga Puja

New Delhi: While it was predicted that a third Covid wave may hit the country during the festive season, India has not seen much rise in Covid numbers. However, West Bengal is witnessing a spurt in the cases of Kovid.

Amid rising cases, the Center has asked the West Bengal government to immediately review the cases and deaths and stressed the importance of ensuring a Covid-safe celebration.

In a letter issued on October 22 to the Health Secretary of West Bengal, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that 20,936 new cases and 343 fresh deaths have been reported in the state in the last 30 days, which is 3.4 per cent and 4.7 per cent of India’s new cases. . The percentage of fresh deaths in the same period, PTI reported.

Expressing concern over the rise in COVID-19 cases in Kolkata, he said the district recorded a higher volume of average daily new cases in the week ending October 21 as well as an increase of over 25 per cent over the previous week. has – from 217 cases in the week ending 14 October to 272 cases in the week ending 21 October.

Bhushan said Kolkata has registered an increase of about 27 per cent in the positivity rate in the last week, from 5.6 per cent in the week ended October 14 to 7.1 per cent in the week ended October 21.

“With the ongoing festive season, it is important to emphasize the importance of covid-safe festivities to sustain the collective gains made so far in the fight against this pandemic,” the Union Health Secretary said.

Bhushan said that the state should ensure strict adherence to COVID-appropriate practices and focus on second dose vaccination coverage for all eligible beneficiaries.

He said it has also been observed that there is a rapid rise in such cases where basic public health strategy of testing, tracking, treatment, covid-appropriate behavior and vaccination is not strictly followed.

After registering nearly 1000 infections for a few days, West Bengal on Tuesday recorded over 800 new Covid-19 cases for the second day in a row, according to health department data.

The state on Tuesday reported 806 new cases, one more than the previous day’s figure, pushing the tally to 15,88,066, while the death toll in 15 fresh fatalities rose to 19,081.

The number of fresh coronavirus cases on Sunday and Saturday stood at 989 and 974 respectively.
