His older brother, Melvin Monteiro, who was working as an electrician at the military hospital in Kabul, returned on 18 August. Demsey said: “We were apprehensive seeing news on TV channels about Taliban attacks. We were not allowed to go out. I have seen soldiers firing in the air at Kabul airport.”
Khadar sought help from the government
Mangaluru MLA UT Khader, who visited Monteiros on Tuesday, said the state and central governments should extend support to those who have returned from Afghanistan.
“Governments should intervene and ensure that those leaving jobs and returning from Afghanistan get benefits. Many of them were working in firms in the US, Germany and other foreign countries. Due to the troubled situation, he has left Afghanistan without waiting for any relief from his employers. So Indian embassies in those foreign countries should hold talks with companies and provide all benefits to those returning to India,” Khader said.
