CDS General Bipin Rawat chopper crash: Air Force orders investigation

Indian Air Force Helicopter Crash: The Indian Air Force (IAF) ordered a probe into Wednesday’s accident Mi-17 V5 Helicopter Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat, his wife and other defense personnel were on board. The medium lift helicopter crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu.

“An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter with CDS General Bipin Rawat crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu today. An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the Indian Air Force said in a statement.

According to reports, there was dense fog in the area when the helicopter crashed while engulfed in flames.

Those on board the IAF’s Mi-17V5 helicopter included CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, Brigadier LS Lidar, Lt Col Harjinder Singh, NK Gursewak Singh, NK Jitendra Kumar, L/NK Vivek Kumar, L/NK B Sai Teja, Havildar Satpal.

Four bodies were recovered from the charred remains of the chopper, news agency PTI quoted official sources as saying. The three injured were rescued and admitted to a nearby hospital.

CDS Rawat has also been admitted to the hospital. Details about his condition are awaited.
