CBSE Class 10 Maths Exam Analysis: Students said they found the paper long and the questions were application based and not directly from NCERT. Students said that the case study questions in the paper were a bit tricky

central board of secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the Class 10 Mathematics exam today, March 21. Experts claim that there were a large number of aptitude-based questions in this exam, making it moderate to difficult. Students said that they found the paper long and the questions were application based and not directly from NCERT. Students claimed that the case study questions in the paper were a bit tricky.

“Even a marker question required a fair amount of calculation, thus, many students found the paper lengthy. While above-average learners enjoyed solving it, for an average learner the paper was a bit discouraging, especially when they have a phobia associated with the subject,” said Deepti Sharma, teacher, Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon.

The case study questions were also tricky, and many students were not able to understand the probability case study. An aptitude-based question paper is good, but when the total number of questions is more than 38 and students are attempting the paper in a three-hour duration, there is a need to balance the number of aptitude-based questions, Sharma said.

“Standard Mathematics was moderate to attempt with some tricky questions. The questions for Basic Mathematics exam were easy. The case study questions in the paper were a bit tricky to solve, but those who prepared well would be able to answer them. Some questions were moderate-difficult and tested the critical thinking and conceptual clarity of the students. Some questions were straight from the books. Some of the questions evoked critical thinking in the students to confirm their knowledge. The MCQs were mostly average but conceptual knowledge was required,” said Vaman Rao, Mathematics teacher at Jain International Residential School, Bangalore.

“The Class 10 CBSE Maths paper conducted today has evoked mixed reactions. The entire paper was designed to test the students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and their ability to apply them in a variety of situations. Overall, the question paper had the right mix of questions of varying difficulty, enabling each student to perform to the best of his/her ability,” said Swati Soni, Head of School, CMR National Public School.

“Section-A of the question paper consisted of objective type questions with most formula-based questions. Section A of the question paper was easy. Sections B and C of the question paper were moderately difficult while Sections D and E were difficult. Most of the questions were long,” said Raji G Krishnan, Manager – Byju’s Tuition Centre.

“The Standard Mathematics section was moderate in difficulty level. All the questions were based on NCERT. Most of the questions were concept based and only a few questions were based on numerical skills. The geometry questions were exactly from the textbooks,” said Anjani Kumar Rai, PGT Mathematics, VidyaGyan School, Bulandshahr.
