CBI court convicts Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim for killing Ranjit Singh in 2002

A special CBI court on Friday convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the 2002 murder of his disciple Ranjit Singh. The special CBI court in Panchkula also convicted four others in the case. He will announce the sentence on October 12. According to the CBI chargesheet, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh had suspected his disciple Ranjit Singh of circulating an anonymous letter accusing the Dera chief of sexually abusing female disciples inside the camp.

Panchkula Special CBI Judge Dr Sushil Kumar Garg convicted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, Jasbir Singh, Sabdil Singh, Krishan Lal and Inder Sen for the murder of Ranjit Singh under sections 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. Convicted. . Jasbir Singh, Krishan Lal and Inder Sen were also convicted under the Arms Act.

The letter circulated by Ranjit Singh was also published by Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, who was also later murdered. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has already been convicted in the journalist’s murder case.

Ranjit was assassinated on 2 July 2002 in Kurukshetra district of Haryana. An FIR on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy was registered at Thanesar police station. The High Court ordered a CBI inquiry in 2003. The CBI filed a charge sheet against the Dera chief and others in 2007.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is serving a 20-year jail term for raping his female followers inside the Dera camp in Sirsa. In August 2017, he was convicted of raping two sadhvis. Soon after his conviction, followers of the Dera chief led to a stampede in Panchkula and other parts of Haryana, killing 36 people and injuring over 400. However, so far no one has been convicted for the violence.
