The title of Prateek Gandhi’s latest film Bhavai was changed from Raavan Leela after allegations of hurting religious sentiments. The CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) has now objected to the title change, which was done earlier this week, as it was done after the board gave the certificate to the film. Change of title after certification is a violation of Cinematograph (Certification) Rules.

The CBFC has sought clarification from the producers as it had come to their notice that they have released the “trailer of the film on YouTube in a distorted form – by changing the title and incorporating the portions that were submitted to the CBFC. Guidelines. This Clearly cinematograph certification is in violation of norms. Hence, CBFC has issued show cause notices seeking clarification from the makers of the film and their reply is currently under consideration. Appropriate action will be taken as per rules and guidelines in due course.”

CBFC Chairman Prasoon Joshi further told News18, “The CFBC has sought an explanation from the makers of Bhavai for violating certification norms and tampering with the content of the film. CBFC has always tried to stick to its guidelines and is making the certification process as smooth and systematic as possible. However, I would like to categorically state that violation of norms of CBFC certification is not acceptable as it compromises the role of the system and balance. Moreover, it also portrays the industry in an irresponsible light.”

Many viewers said that the film’s name was changed to Bhavai after Raavan Leela and the trailer title hurt their religious sentiments. The makers had said in a statement, “Our film Bhavai is a fictional love story of two men working in a drama company and how their lives change from stage to stage. The promo of the film was released under the title Raavan Leela, as the protagonist is a drama actor who plays the role of Ravana in the play. With regard to the concerns regarding the title of the promo and a dialogue in the promo, we would like to clarify that the dialogues and the title ‘Raavan Leela’ are not part of the film and have been removed from the promo for the sentiments of our viewers.” The film is said to have already been approved and passed by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) under the “U” category.
