It was a nervous finale as Cavendish appeared to lean towards another rider as he jockeyed with a distance of almost two kilometres.
“I have people coming over and the safe way is to actually use your head, but I had to see it,” Manxman, 36, who hadn’t won a podium on the Tour since 2016 before this year, explained.
When asked about Merckx’s record, Cavendish said: “I don’t realize, it’s still another win on the Tour de France.
“As a kid my dream was to win a stage on the Tour de France and I worked very hard for it. If any of my victories can inspire kids to ride the Tour de France, it’s the most to me. It matters.”
While Cavendish claimed his victory in the bunch sprint at the end of the flat stages, Merckx was victorious on all terrain.
He also won a record five Tour de France titles, three green jerseys for the points classification, and won the mountains classification twice in seven rounds between 1969 and 1977.
“No rider can be compared to Eddie Merckx,” Cavendish said.
