Cases of fraud by misusing codes are on the rise in Kolkata; Precaution, the only savior, say police

Your life may be at stake just by typing some code suggested by an unknown dialer. This can result in both loss of control of your phone and financial damage. Before some users even guess that their personal information was leaked, either large sums of loan are approved in the bank’s ID or they start withdrawing money from people in their “phone-book”.

Kolkata Police personnel said, “For the last two months, the number of code fraud cases has increased”. For this fraud Lalbazar (Kolkata Police Headquarters) has often advised people to be careful, they have suggested not to fall prey to fraud by pressing any code. And if anything has happened, they should file a complaint at the earliest.

What is this code?

According to the police, a code can be made by using a symbol like “*#@-&”. By using this code one can get complete command of his entire phone, or just camera, speaker and microphone. Even some codes can completely ruin the phone, even unlocking the locked phone with these codes is not that complicated. The police said that earlier mobile manufacturers used to make those codes for their purpose. Primarily, the code is their personal property which is used for mobile servicing. But due to the trend of dark web, people used to hack the servers of mobile manufacturers and sell those codes. Currently, there are a lot of videos available on the internet regarding code management.

How are codes causing fraud?

According to the police, 21 and 401 are the most commonly used codes for hacking. After dialing the code, hackers have to follow a few steps to swing power to the entire phone. Hackers are making excuses like this can increase the speed of the internet. Users believe that many of their complaints are yet to be resolved. Since the introduction of call forwarding, it has become very easy that OTP users are receiving on their phones regarding their bank transactions and passwords of social media handles. Recently, hackers are using passwords and asking for money from their friends list on social media.

How to counter it?

Earlier, hackers used to accomplish their malicious target by asking them to download the app, said an official of Cyber Crime Department, Lalbazar. But since people have become smarter about this method, hackers have changed their methods and started using the code. He said the only relief from this evil plan is to become more aware while using our devices.
