Carson closes to play, returns to practice for Seattle

RENTON, Wash.: Running back Chris Carson, the Seattle Seahawks returned to practice on Wednesday after coming out of injured reserve, but there was no guarantee of playing hell against Green Bay.

Meanwhile, quarterback Russell Wilson was on his way back against the Packers after missing three games due to finger surgery.

Coach Pete Carroll said he expected Carson to be able to play, but his progress in his return from a neck issue that has sidelined him since the fourth week will be assessed daily between now and Sunday.

He has to make it through the work week and like we always talk, it’s one day at a time, Carroll said. Hell be a little bang around tomorrow. But just see how he reacts to it. It is very important to make a good bet on it. He’ll feel good physically, running around and all that because he’s in great shape and working out really hard.

Seattle remains unclear about Carson’s status, saying it is an issue the team is aware of and which has flared up at times, but offers few details. This is the longest Carson has been sidelined by illness since Seattle chose to keep him on injured reserve and give him enough time to recover.

Carson started the first four games of the season and had three rushing touchdowns, even as Seattle’s run game has been utterly disappointing. Carson hit a season-high 91 yards in Week 1 against Indianapolis, but had just 30 yards on 13 carries in Week 4 against San Francisco, the last game he played.

Alex Collins has been Carson’s primary choice of running back since the exit and posted Seattle’s first 100-yard rushing game since the 2019 season in Week 6 in Pittsburgh. Collins has also suffered some injuries and Rashad Penney has been mostly ineffective in his limited action since returning from injured reserve.

Coming off their bye, Seattle is ranked 21st in the league, averaging 102.9 yards rushing per game.

Seattle is also hoping that rookie will consider playing second-round pic d’escriz this week after they were ruled out from the first week with an injury. Eskridge was also named earlier this week to return to practice from injured reserve.

Seattle had high hopes of how Escrize’s pace could be used in their offense, but he was limited to one catch and two rushes in the opener against Indianapolis.

We hope he feels well, Carroll said. We have cleared our people. We hope they do well and do all that, but still have to wait.
