‘Caribbean means a lot to us as people’: Curtly Ambrose on West Indies ‘series win over England’

The series win against England was a welcome boost for Caribbean cricket, but that doesn’t mean West Indies have long turned the corner, former bowling great Curtly Ambrose said on Sunday.

Speaking in the wake of West Indies’ 10-wicket win over England in the decider Test in Grenada, Ambrose, who took 405 Test wickets at an average of under 21, was clearly pleased with the result.

However, he offered a serious reality check for anyone wondering that the team was on the verge of enjoying the world-defeating success the West Indies teams had in the 70s, 80s and early 90s.

“It means a lot not only to the team but to us as people of the Caribbean,” Ambrose said in his role as TV commentator.

“We were spoiled, for many years we were the best team in the world, outperforming everyone else. We have had some lean years. There is still a lot of work to do.

“Winning a game does not mean we have turned a corner, but it is a step in the right direction. We have seen in the past that they crumble when they come under pressure. That didn’t happen in this series.”

The victory extended the West Indies’ home dominance over England over the past 50 years – eight wins and two draws in 11 series, with England’s only series win in 2003–04.

The latest win can’t hide that West Indies were ruled out for most of the first two Tests in the series, and were thankful to have avoided a draw on suppressed pitches in the end.

Captain Craig Brathwaite, player of the series, thanks in large part to his batting in the second Test, where he scored a marathon 160 before adding an unbeaten 56, said his team had a good attitude and appreciated his young and old players. equally praised.

Whether Nkrumah Bonner scored a century in the first Test or Kyle Meyers 7-31 in the third, he said someone has always stepped in when the situation demands.

“These are the people who are willing to learn,” he said.

“We have guys like (fast bowler) Kemar Roach and (all-rounder) Jason Holder. They are great examples to follow.

“We put in a lot of work (in preparation and) it just through every game, someone else raising their hands and doing their job, the effort was remarkable.”
