candidate won by 1 vote; Elected as 90-year-old panchayat leader: Tamil Nadu local body polls shocked

In the nine reorganized districts of Tamil Nadu, local body elections were held in two phases in Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Tenkasi, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirunelveli, Kallakurichi and Tiruppattur. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has won the rural local body elections in the state.

Out of 140 Zilla Panchayat Ward Member posts, DMK and its alliance have won 138 posts and AIADMK has won two posts.

Earlier, the State Election Commission had started the counting of votes in the rural LB elections of nine reorganized districts on October 12 at 74 counting centres.

Meanwhile, the state witnessed a tough political battle between the major political parties – DMK and AIADMK. There are 27,003 posts for election in these nine districts. In the first phase held on October 6, voting was held for 78 district panchayat ward member posts, 755 panchayat union ward member posts, 1,577 gram panchayat president posts and 12,252 gram panchayat ward and member posts.

The second phase took place on October 9 for 62 district panchayat ward member posts, 626 panchayat union ward member posts, 1,324 gram panchayat president posts and 10,329 gram panchayat ward member posts.

According to the polling body, 77.4 per cent voters participated in the first phase of polling, while the number stood at 78.5 per cent in the second phase.

Here are some interesting discussions that caught the eye of the counting centres:

1. Karthik, the vice-president of the BJP youth wing in Coimbatore’s northern taluk, who contested as an independent candidate for the post of a ward member in the Periyanaikanapalayam union in Coimbatore, secured only one vote in the Tamil Nadu local body elections. #SingleVoteBJP is trending on Twitter across the country.

2. During the counting of votes in Vellaiyampattu Panchayat of Villupuram district, officials found that a person has stamped four out of five symbols on the ballot paper. The incident made the officials laugh, the vote was later declared invalid.

3. ‘A voter can turn a loser into a winner’- Kadalmani won by a margin of ‘one’ vote for the Sirumrudur panchayat leader post near Lalgudi. The by-election was held due to the death of Ramesh Kumar, the panchayat leader of Sirumurudur. Out of three contesting in this panchayat with a total of 1,150 votes, the wife of deceased panchayat leader Ramesh Kumar got 423 votes, Kadalmani got 424 votes, Satyanathan got 137 votes and 5 votes were considered invalid with a total of 989 votes.

4. Out of 169 candidates in the local body elections, more than 50 members of actor Vijay’s fan union won. Earlier, members of Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Ayakkam have confirmed that actor Vijay himself had allowed his fans to file nominations for the LB polls.

5. Perumthal, a 90 year old woman has proved that age is just a number. He has been elected as the President of Sivanthipatti Panchayat under Bhagavakottai Panchayat Union of Tirunelveli District. Meanwhile, the deposits of two other candidates who contested against him were forfeited.

6 . Vote, thus I do not support anyone’.

7. Siblings won in local body elections: Kannurangam, who belongs to Kaveripattu area near Jolarpet in Tiruppattur district, his daughters Mala Sekhar (50) and Uma Kannurangam (48) contested for the post of Kaveripattu panchayat president and 651 Won by votes. and won for the post of union councilor, respectively, with 1,972 votes.
