Vitamin D has long been known to help our bodies absorb and retain minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, which are important for bones. Vitamin D can be obtained from many sources including exposure to sunlight, supplements and certain foods.

Apart from natural sources like brackish fish, red meat, egg yolk, etc., there are people who take this vitamin deficiency supplement. However, these supplements are always taken only after consulting a doctor.

As we know that excess of anything is bad, similarly overuse of supplements has adverse effects on our body. According to Dr. Karun Makhija, MBBS and MD in Preventive Medicine, excessive doses of Vitamin D can damage the kidneys and bones and lead to higher than normal formation of calcium in our body. Health experts recommend that people who take dietary supplements often have their blood tests done to detect toxicity levels. In case of high blood levels, use of vitamin D supplements should be discontinued immediately.

Priyanka Jaiswal, Co-Founder and Chief Dietitian, Diet to Nourish, highlights the right supplement dosage, saying that it depends on the age and health of the individual. She explains that typically the minimum dosage starts at 400 IU (international units) per day and increases to 800 IU. Priyanka further said that the cases of deaths due to the use of supplements have never come to her notice but wrong dosage and excessive intake can affect the fragility of bones and absorption of calcium.

Points to remember:

  • An overdose of vitamin D supplements damages the bones and kidneys as well as other parts of the body.
  • It is important to consult a doctor before its use and to know about the correct dosage.
  • Get a blood test done to find out the level of toxicity.
  • Sunlight is the best source of vitamin D.
