BYJU’s Fires 1000 Employees, or 15% Staff Today: Report

New Delhi: Online education company Bjyu’s has announced further reduction of 1000 jobs or 15% of the workforce in engineering roles. On February 2, 2023, some people were dropped from every tech team of Byju’s via email.

BYJU’s is an online education giant in India, founded by BYJU Raveendran and his wife. Ed-tech unicorn BYJU has roped in football legend Lionel Messi as its global brand ambassador, days after the company laid off 2,500 employees to cut costs amid mounting losses.

According to the layoff tracker website layoffs.fyi, in the first month of 2023, more than 80,000 employees of 258 tech companies have lost their jobs. January 2023 saw the highest number of layoffs in a single month as the website is tracking the layoffs.

Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, and Vimeo were among the big tech companies that laid off or announced substantial reductions in their workforce worldwide. Last month, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced plans to lay off 12,000 employees worldwide, while Microsoft laid off about 10,000 employees.
