By October this year, the number of accounts of PM Jan Dhan Yojana increased to 44 crores.

A finance ministry official said on Friday that the bank accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) have grown to 44 crore in 7 years till October 2021.

PMJDY was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address on 15 August 2014, and was simultaneously launched on 28 August 2014 to promote financial inclusion.

This national mission was launched to ensure that people have affordable access to financial services, namely banking, remittance, credit, insurance, pension.

Manisha Sensarma, Economic Adviser, Department of Economic Affairs, while speaking at an ASSOCHAM event on ‘National e-Summit on Financial Inclusion – Roadmap for Inclusive India’ said that the PM Jan Dhan Yojana has seen immense success since its launch.

“A digital pipeline has been laid for the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana… As of October 2021, around 44 crore beneficiaries have been banked so far and we have been able to raise funds from very small to very small scales. through the marginalized section of the population,” Sensarma said.

He added that the JAM trinity, which is linking bank accounts with Aadhaar and mobile numbers, has also helped in improving the targeting of social sector programs and addressing the right section of people.

Sensarma said that earlier also a lot of benefits were being received from the government but there was doubt about whether they were reaching the right people or not.

“But through the use of technology, the benefits are now reaching the eligible and identified beneficiary so that there is no wastage and leakage of resources,” she said.
