BWF World Championships: HS Prannoy crashed into quarterfinals after straight game loss to Yu Kean Loh

India’s HS Prannoy bowed out of the BWF World Championships 2021 on Friday after losing in straight games to Loh Keen Yew of Singapore in the men’s singles quarterfinals in Spain.

World No. 32 Prannoy looked bad against his No. 22 opponent and crashed out of the tournament after losing 14-21, 12-21 at the Carolina Marin Stadium in just 43 minutes.

Loh Kean Yew will now face Denmark’s Anger Antonsen in the second semi-final. Antonsen reached the last four after his Malaysian rival, Lee Zi Jia, retired hurt in the third game after both players had won a game each.

Prannoy had a scintillating win over 11th seed Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the round of 16 but could not do the same on Friday.

Prannoy was the fourth Indian and third male player from the country to reach the last-8 of the competition this year after PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth.

Prannoy and Sindhu’s campaign ended in the quarters, while Lakshya and Srikanth put on an all-India show in the men’s singles semi-finals on Saturday.

Sindhu’s title defense ends World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying won the women’s singles quarterfinal 21-17, 21-13. It was Sindhu’s 5th consecutive loss to Tai Tzu Ying as the Taiwanese star extended her head-to-head record against the Indian shutters 15-5.

Meanwhile, Lakshya beat China’s Zhao Jun Peng 21-15, 15-21, 22-20 in one hour and 7 minutes on Friday to become the first Indian male shutter to win a medal in his maiden world event.

The 20-year-old will face compatriot Srikanth, who defeated Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands 21-8, 21-7 to become the third Indian to secure a medal at the prestigious tournament.
