Bunty Aur Babli 2 Movie Review: Rani Mukerji, Saif Ali Khan’s film piggybacks on the success of the prequel

Bunty Aur Babli 2

Director: Varun V Sharma

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji, Pankaj Tripathi, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh

Bunty Aur Babli’s journey began 15 years ago in the first installment, which ended with them settling down as simple middle-class couple in Fursatganj, Uttar Pradesh. In the sequel, the story of the pilot characters – Rakesh and Vimmi Trivedi – played by Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji respectively, begins in the same colorful city. Rakesh is a ticket collector and Vimmi is a typical happy-go-lucky middle-class housewife who keeps going with retro and loud outfits.

The couple has settled in their railway colony with their son, but things take a turn when they learn that their name is being used in multiple cases. Siddhant Chaturvedi (Kunal) and Sharvari Wagh (Sonia), two engineering pass-outs, play new-age con masters with a mission in mind.

Another person to complete the film is Inspector Jatayu Singh, played by Pankaj Tripathi. Actors are seen doing what they do best with such characters. His dialogue delivery and comic timing somewhat eschew the film’s disappointing direction and storytelling elements.

Reading: Rani Mukerji: Adira has a special connection with Bunty Aur Babli 2, she loved me in the film. Unique

Though Rani and Saif strike the right chord between the middle-aged couple on screen, some of the references and jokes that could have come organically, seem forced and unnecessary. Despite some over-the-top performances by the other lead characters, debutante Sharvari Wagh impresses on the big screen with her acting skills opposite the talented Siddhant Chaturvedi.

Speaking of the main plot of the film – some of the cons are predictable, but some are quirky and interesting. Debutant director Varun V Sharma has tried to capture the essence of the previous instalment, but somewhere disappoints with the depth of the script and the entertainment portion. The background score adds a much needed nostalgic factor to the film.

The climax is somewhat predictable and contains what everyone can expect. Overall, the film is a one-time watch and doesn’t offer any big surprises or matches up to the entertainment quotient of the first instalment. The script and plot of the film is a full set sequel that is built on the success of the first instalment.
