Bully Bai: If you still don’t understand why this is a crime, read this

While the social media outrage over the Bully Bai app continues, there is a section of the population, both online and offline, who are unable to understand why the ‘bully bai’ is making headlines and what the actual crime is. In fact, some people are seen on Twitter justifying the fact that the Bulli Bye app may have been made just for fun and didn’t cause any problems for the women listed for ‘auction’ in real life. These justifications make things miserable because a society cannot even collectively understand what is wrong and what needs to be corrected.

The thought process stems from the fact that there is little awareness of online harassment in certain sections of our society. For him, the discussion around crime against women mostly revolves around rape and physical abuse. Offenses like eve teasing, stalking, flashing, online trolling, photo morphing etc are considered ‘just for fun’. And this same ideology leads to the justification of organized crimes like sulli or bulli ‘auctions’.

Breaking Down Bully Bye: What’s Really Wrong

To understand what’s wrong with Bully Bai and why it’s wrong, imagine the following scenario: You’re browsing through Facebook and you suddenly encounter your younger sister or cousin or another female member of your family. Come along with an offensive caption like “Hey, contact here for fun” along with the person’s actual phone number or Twitter ID.

Consider another scenario where someone sends you a screenshot of a Tinder page containing your wife’s picture, Instagram ID and phone number (written in words).

how would you feel Now, let the feeling multiply when your sister or wife’s photo goes viral on Twitter, Facebook and other platforms and people start making lewd comments. ‘Just for fun’ will be the last thing on your mind then. This is where the harassment begins.

Now in both the cases the women have no idea how their pictures went viral. Some underage miscreants have stolen pictures from social media sites like LinkedIn, Twitter etc and created fake profiles for their version of ‘Fun’.

Something similar happened with Bulli Bai as well. A group of underage people collected photos of successful and influential women belonging to the Muslim community from sites like LinkedIn and Twitter and created an app called Bulli Bai on GitHub. Through that app, pictures of the woman were displayed with the title “Din Ki Aapki Bulli Bai”…

The word Bulli is another form of Sully Deal which came up six months back. The word ‘Sulli’ is a term used to troll Muslim women.

While the Bulli Bai app was known to a very small group of online users, what turned it into a full-fledged online harassment was a section of Twitter users starting to tag the handles of women found on the Bulli Bai app. Soon, the app went viral and online trolling and bullying of targeted women started, leading to unnecessary mental harassment during early 2022.

Here’s How Bully Bye Makers Are Legally Offensive

You can argue that the Indian Penal Code does not define direct punishment for online harassment, but the IT Act and the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013 have enough provisions to define bully by app makers as criminals. . In fact, the act of stealing photos without consent attracts section 354C of IPC while 354D covers stalking.

Hate speech and comments can be combined into defamation and insulting a woman’s modesty through a legally organized Bully Bai campaign. Sections like 499, 503, 506, 507 and 509 of the IPC can be invoked to book the culprits.

Further, under sections 66C, 66E, 67, 67A of the IT Act, creators of Sully and Bulli platforms can be put behind bars, if the government wants to act.

So, if you are under the impression that the media is only sensationalizing the Bulli Bai controversy and the creators of the Bulli Bai app are being unnecessarily targeted as they have not committed any major crime, then it is time to take a closer look at the reality. Check out. Open your eyes and try to understand that this was an organized attempt to harass, defame and bully about a hundred women.
