BTS’ Min Yoongi, aka Suga, is known for his candid self, who never shies away from calling a spade a spade. So, back when he was asked about the Grammy Awards, the South Korean singer quickly called it “local”, a remark that Oscar-winning film Parasite’s director Bong Joon Ho had previously made. Suga’s statement caused a frenzy among the fans.
In 2023, when Suga was on his AgustD World Tour following the release of his first solo album, D-Day, the LA Times asked him about his thoughts on the Grammy Awards. BTS had received five nominations for the prestigious awards, but they never won them, which led ARMYs to criticise the awards ceremony. So, when the K-pop idol was asked about the awards, he did not hold himself back and said, “Isn’t that a local thing?” This remark struck a chord with many of the boy band’s fans, who hailed Suga for such a straightforward reply.
Parasite’s director, Bong Joon Ho, made the remark in 2020 when he was asked about the Oscars, emphasising their Western-centric nature. He called the Academy Awards “very local” when he was questioned whether he thought it was odd that no South Korean film had ever been nominated at the Oscars before.
Speaking of BTS, the group performed at the 2022 Grammy Awards ceremony before the members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook enlisted in the military to complete their mandatory service towards their nation. The K-pop group enthralled the audience with an electrifying performance of their song Butter. The high-energy performance received a standing ovation from the audience.
During his conversation with Weverse Magazine, Suga reflected on their performance at the Grammys and shared that the group had practised really hard for their performance. He said, “We’re not going to do that kind of performance again for quite a while. We had a part that involved clothes, and there was a dance break in the middle, too. The process of getting ready was extremely hectic, too: Seokjin got hurt, and Hobi and Jung Kook were in quarantine, so there were times when it was just the four of us. It was an experience I won’t soon forget.”
Speaking of BTS, Jin and J-Hope were recently discharged after they completed their mandatory service. RM, V, Jimin and Jungkook have completed 60 percent of their service and are said to complete the same by June next year. Suga will be the last to join the group, as his discharge date is July 2025.
