BSP will fight alone in UP, Uttarakhand, Mayawati clarified amid rumors of alliance

The Bahujan Samaj Party will fight the upcoming Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand elections alone, party chief Mayawati said on Sunday amid reports of an alliance.

The BSP, former UP cabinet minister Om Prakash Rajbhar-led Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) and Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) will come together under the umbrella of the Partnership Sankalp Morcha to contest the 2022 UP elections. Mayawati’s clarification has come amid reports of Assembly elections.

There was talk in political circles that Mayawati and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi have held several rounds of talks and the latter is coming to Lucknow next month to formalize the alliance.

Mayawati denied media reports of the alliance on Twitter, saying that the BSP would go it alone in the elections.

The BSP is facing a crisis a few months ahead of the elections after the party expelled two senior party leaders, state legislature party leader Lalji Verma and former state party president Ramchal Rajbhar, for anti-party activities.

Verma and Rajbhar, senior OBC leaders of the party and ministers in the erstwhile Mayawati government, are MLAs from Ambedkar Nagar district in eastern UP.

This comes after the party’s dismal performance in the recently concluded panchayat elections in the state. The BSP performed poorly in the panchayat elections, finishing third behind the BJP and the SP.

There were also reports of a trusted aide of Mayawati. Satish Chandra Mishra Emerging as a thorn in the flesh of 11 party MLAs sacked by Mayawati in the last two years, most of whom have accused Mishra of creating differences and misleading her.
