BRS is reeling under crisis after crisis – from MLA ‘chokegate’ case to TSPSC paper leak – and party leaders fend off opposition’s onslaught

The newly formed Bharat Rashtra Samithi is in the news for all the wrong reasons, with Telangana MLC Kavitha being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in the alleged Delhi liquor scam. With the party reeling under one crisis after another in an election year: From the MLA ‘poachgate’ case not going in their favor to the TSPSC paper leak, the BRS leaders are fending off the onslaught of the opposition.

At a meeting on Monday, BRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao urged the members to counter the opposition’s “disinformation campaign”. The chief minister is scheduled to tour the areas after the BJP and the Congress raised the issue of farmers being affected by the hailstorm in some parts of the state.

Here are four reasons why BRS is feeling the heat at the moment:

  1. Kavitha and ED: The questioning of the MLC by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Delhi Excise Policy matter has drawn attention from all quarters. Though her lawyer had argued that as a woman, she should be questioned at her residence in Hyderabad and not Delhi, the ED did not comply with that request. The Supreme Court will hear Kavita’s plea on March 24, in which she has said that a woman cannot be called to the ED’s office for questioning. He had said that this could be done either through video conferencing or face to face at his residence. Till the hearing, Kavita will have to continue appearing for the summons.
  2. BJP’s victory in MLC elections In the recently held Mahbubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad Teachers MLC elections, BJP supported candidate A Venkata Narayan Reddy has won. Chenna Keshava Reddy, the PRTU candidate indirectly supported by the BRS, was dropped after the 20th round of counting. Union Minister Amit Shah tweeted and congratulated the winner. He had said that the victory showed that the people of Telangana were fed up with corruption and wanted a transparent government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  3. MLA poaching case The SC recently directed the Telangana police not to investigate the MLA poaching case. The state police had appealed against the High Court’s decision to hand over the case to the CBI. The state had argued that since the incident took place in Hyderabad and involved state leaders, state agencies should be able to investigate it. The matter reached the Supreme Court and for now, it has asked both the CBI or the Telangana Police not to continue with the investigation as the matter is sub-judice. Last November, BRS MLA Pilot Rohit Reddy made a sensational claim that the BJP had tried to get him into the party by paying a bribe of Rs 100 crore. Audio and video recordings of the alleged deal had surfaced on social media.
  4. TSPSC Paper Leak: Paper leak in a recruitment exam has created a huge controversy and BRS is in full swing on damage control. Congress President A Revanth Reddy was served a notice by the Special Investigation Team probing the matter for making serious allegations against the state government. The Congress leader had said that IT Minister KT Rama Rao’s personal assistant was involved in the leak. He was soon served a notice asking him to share the information with the SIT. Since the exam was cancelled, all opposition parties have taken to the streets to protest
