Broncos’ Mike Boone Bidding Time After Coming In As Backup

England, Colo.: For a primetime game, Mike Boone returned to the role he was brought in to fill by the Denver Broncos backup.

The Cincinnati fourth-year player showed what he could do, delivering the occasional respite to rookie standout Javonte Williams during Sunday night’s 22-9 loss to Kansas City.

But with Melvin Gordon III set to return from a hip injury against Detroit this weekend, and Williams made 23 carries for 102 yards, the odd-back-out against Chiefs Boons were looking like.

You want to get Carrie. You want that exposure. Who doesn’t? What was in it for it, said Boone, who had four carries for 35 yards in Kansas City. No one is there to play in the shadows. But its my position I am in now. So it’s not my decision if I get any more carry. If I do, if my number gets called, I’ll be there.

Boone was signed to a special-team ace by the Broncos in March, which caught the eye of Broncos general manager George Patton when they were both with the Minnesota Vikings. Boone was expected to compete for the backup job for spelling Gordon.

Then, 26-year-old Boone injured his quadriceps during a joint exercise with the Vikings in August. He was placed on injured reserve and missed the first five weeks of the season.

It opened even more doors for Williams, who suffered a second-round injury from the University of North Carolina.

Boone gets it. He is also a big fan of Williams.

The explosive, as is known to all, said Boone, which was inactive against Cleveland on October 21 and against Philadelphia on November 14. Everyone also knows you can’t bring him down. He works hard and just to get in and be a rookie, you have to respect the work he’s doing and how he’s playing.

So Boone is patient, waiting for his chance again. Meanwhile, Hell contributes to the special teams. He was involved in 453 special-team snaps over the past two seasons in Minnesota. He also ran for a career-high 148 yards while running against Chicago in 2019.

It’s upside down, like the Broncos envisioned in Boone. He showed another glimpse in Kansas City, where he also had a 19-yard catch.

I was excited for him, Gordon said. He was waiting for his chance for a long time. He might have wanted a little more opportunity, but was bowling 3-3 (Williams’s number), so he stopped him a bit. For the opportunities that (Boone) got, he made the best of them and showed that he deserves to be in this league.

The way coach Vic Fangio spoke, it sounds like the Broncos (6-6) will return in a 1-2 tailback combination of Gordon and Williams against the Lions (1-10-1).

Or maybe Williams and then Gordon.

They are two good players, and use them both well, Fangio said.

Again, Boone understands.

The same effort I give on offense, I give to special teams, Boone said.

A heads-up to the coaching staff: Boone can play slot receiver. The 5-foot-10, 206-pound Boone clocked the time at Baker County High School in Glen St. Mary, Florida, where he once scored 211 yards in a game.

I used to tell my quarterback, Throw it, and I get you, Boone said. Look, if (Broncos) I need to play slots, I’ll play slots. I’ll play three-take (defensive line), whatever. …but right now I’m running back, so I’ll focus on that.

Notes: Ready to become a free agent, Gordon hopes to return to Denver next season. I don’t think many people want me even as far as fans are concerned. I’ve seen a lot. I understand I get it,” said Gordon, who said he felt fine for the most part after missing a Chiefs game with a hip ailment and believes he can play on Sunday. “Love the fans, regardless of the hate right now. I think it’s mostly because of fantasy (football). … CB Bryce Callahan (knee) returned to the practice area this week but Fangio wasn’t sure he’d play on Sunday. … OLB Bradley Chubb (shoulder/ankle), DE Shelby Harris (ankle) and Gordon were limited in practice on Thursday.
