Hancock resigned after revelations that he broke the government’s own coronavirus restrictions during an affair with a close aide.
UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock resigned on Saturday following revelations that he had broken the government coronavirus Restrictions during a relationship with a close colleague. A newspaper published a picture of him kissing and hugging his top colleague in his office.
“I am writing to resign from the position of Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. We have worked very hard as a country to fight the pandemic. The last thing I want is for my personal life to distract from the single-minded focus that is driving us out of this crisis,” Hancock said in his resignation letter.
“I want to reiterate my apologies for breaking the guidance, and apologize to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need to be with my kids at this time.”
The frontman for Britain’s response to the pandemic, particularly the vaccine roll-out, left Prime Minister Boris Johnson reiterating his earlier apology in a letter.
“We are indebted to those who have sacrificed so much on this pandemic that to be honest when we have let them down as I did by violating guidance,” he wrote.
