British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss to visit India on 31 March

new Delhi: British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss will visit India on Thursday in the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Announcing the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday said that the truce will hold consultations with its Indian counterpart S Jaishankar on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Over the past few weeks, there has been a flurry of visits by Western leaders to India, including the foreign ministers of Austria and Greece and Victoria Nuland, the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

The evolving situation in Ukraine is likely to be discussed extensively during Truss’s talks with Jaishankar.

“The visit will serve to further deepen our partnership in diverse areas such as trade and investment, science, technology and innovation, defense and security, climate cooperation, education and digital communications,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

It said the truss would also participate in the inaugural edition of the India-UK Strategic Futures Forum, a Track 1.5 dialogue between the two countries.

India-UK ties were elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership during the India-UK virtual summit held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Boris Johnson in May last year.

At the summit, both sides adopted a 10-year roadmap to expand ties in key areas of trade and economy, defense and security, climate change and people-to-people ties.

This will be the second visit of the UK Foreign Secretary to India after the virtual summit.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that the visit of the Truss will also provide an opportunity to assess the progress on the ‘Roadmap 2030’.
