Punjab’s first Dalit Chief Minister Charanjit Channi took oath on Monday along with two Deputy Chief Ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni. Earlier, the name of Brahm Mahindra along with Randhawa had cropped up for Deputy CM, but this did not happen. There is a discussion in the political circles that Brahm Mahindra’s leaf was also cut due to the opposition of Navjot Sidhu camp. It is clear from the whole incident that the Sidhu camp is still adamant on not giving place to any close to Captain Amarinder Singh in the Channi government.

This is also the first time that Majha region has been given responsibility on such a large scale. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa is MLA from Dera Baba Nanak and OP Soni is MLA from Amritsar Central Assembly Constituency. 57 years ago Pratap Singh Kairon became the Chief Minister from Majha, after that Majha region did not get a chance to lead in Punjab on such a large scale.

maths of seats in punjab
Of the total 117 seats in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, 69 are in Malwa. There are total 25 assembly seats in Majha and 23 in Doaba. In the 2017 elections, the Congress had won 40 seats from Malwa region, 22 from Majha and 15 from Doaba.

Can be fulfilled by making cabinet minister
It is very important in the politics of Punjab that Congress has made two deputy CMs from Majha region after the Chief Minister from Malwa region. Most of the leaders of Malwa have been close to Captain Amarinder. This is the biggest reason why the Sidhu camp is sidelining him. Malwa has one and a half times the seats than Majha and Doaba. The Malwa region, which gives the maximum number of seats to the Congress, cannot be ignored. In such a situation, Congress can fulfill it by making a cabinet minister from here. It remains to be seen what the number of these ministers will be.

Ashu’s name also came along with Brahm Mahindra
After the political drama on Sunday, the name of Charanjit Singh Channi was decided for the Chief Minister late in the evening. After this, Sukhjinder Randhawa and Brahm Mahindra agreed to become Deputy Chief Ministers. However, the name of Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who was the Cabinet Minister for Deputy CM, also came in the discussion. At their house, drums were also played and congratulations were also received. But soon his name was cut.

Soni was close to the captain, now the distance
Omprakash Soni was born on 3 July 1957 in Bilowal, Amritsar to Jagat Mitra Soni. After becoming a councilor, he was elected mayor of Amritsar in 1991. In 1997, Soni became MLA from Amritsar Central for the first time. Now he has been elected MLA for the 5th time. Soni was earlier considered very close to Captain Amarinder Singh. After Navjot Singh Sidhu became the president, he became close to him and joined the anti-captain camp. Due to Sidhu’s protest, Brahm Mahindra’s leaf was cut and OP Soni became the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab.
