Both Channi and Sidhu have given assurance that whoever is the chief minister of Punjab will support them: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu have assured him that both will support whoever is the chief minister’s face.

Gandhi said Congress workers will take the final call on the chief minister’s face in Punjab.

“Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi and state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu assured me that whoever (CM face) leads Punjab, another person will support him. Party workers will decide,” he said while addressing a gathering in Punjab, reported ANI.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Chief Minister has categorically maintained that there is no fight between him and Sidhu for the top post.

“Announce the chief minister’s face for Punjab elections, we (Punjab Congress) will remain united,” Channi said during a meeting.

The remarks came after the Punjab Congress President raised the issue of CM candidate with Gandhi.

Sidhu said that voters should not be kept on tenterhooks and Congress should declare the CM candidate.

The cricketer-turned-politician, however, said that all would support the person selected for the coveted post.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Congress released its second list of 23 candidates for the Punjab Assembly elections.

The old party, which is trying to retain power in Punjab, has so far announced candidates for 109 out of 117 seats.

Polling for the Punjab Assembly will be held in a single phase on February 14. The results will be declared on March 10.
